The inviolability of the client's dignity in psychological counseling outside the field of medicine

By Sandra Neumayr, President of the Association for Psychological Counseling (VpsyB e.V.)

Within the constitutive network of psychological practice and counseling interventions outside the field of medicine, the dignity of the client occupies an axiomatic position. This inviolability of client dignity forms the ethical backbone of any counseling process and is embedded in the complex nexus of professionalism, empathy and ethical principles. This paper aims to explore the dimensions and gravitas that the preservation of client dignity holds for counseling success and ethical integrity in psychological counseling outside of the healing arts.

A definitional approach to client dignity

The dignity of an individual manifests itself as an inviolable and inherent attribute that exists independently of status, beliefs or individual characteristics. In psychological counseling, it transcends the mere recognition of the client's humanity and implies a profound respect for their autonomy, personality and life experience. The inviolability of the client's dignity is concretized in the creation of a space that guarantees freedom from judgment, discrimination and degradation.

Principles of safeguarding client dignity

1. unconditional positive regard:
This principle, originally coined by Carl Rogers, emphasizes the need to offer each client unconditional acceptance and a value-laden, appreciative approach, which forms the basis for a successful therapeutic alliance.

2. empathic resonance:
The counselor's ability to empathize with the client's emotional world without losing professional distance is essential for confirming the client's dignity and for fostering a relationship of trust.

3. discretion and data protection:
In times of advancing digitalization, the protection of sensitive data is not only a legal necessity, but also an expression of respect for privacy and thus the dignity of the client.

4. self-determination:
Supporting clients in their autonomous decision-making reflects the recognition of their self-determination and personal dignity.

Implementation strategies to safeguard the client's dignity

The translation of theory into practicable guidelines for action requires a multi-perspective approach that extends not only to the individual consultant but also to the institutional level:

1. codes of ethics:
The development and incremental adaptation of professional codes of ethics, which explicitly address the dignity of the client, establish a binding set of rules for counseling practice.

2. further training and supervision:
Regular further training events and participation in supervision processes promote the reflective examination of ethical dilemmas and support counselors in the perception and preservation of client dignity.

3. quality assurance:
Implementation of quality assurance mechanisms that ensure compliance with ethical standards and consideration of client dignity in every counseling process.

The inextricable link between psychological counseling practice and the preservation of client dignity forms the basis for counseling effectiveness and ethical integrity. As an ongoing task, it requires unwavering commitment and continuous ethical reflection and self-examination from every member of the professional community. As psychological counseling evolves outside of the healing arts, it is imperative to adapt and evolve discursive and operational processes to meet the noble responsibility to hold sacred and protect the dignity of each client. As President of VpsyB e.V., I am committed to working collaboratively with the entire Board of Directors to represent and defend this mission as the guiding principle of our work and our professional identity.
