Implementation strategies of VpsyB e.V. for the professionalization and destigmatization of practicing psychological counsellors outside the medical profession in Germany

By Sandra Neumayr, President of the Association for Psychological Counseling (VpsyB e.V.)

This analysis focuses on the measures developed by the Association of Psychological Counsellors (VpsyB e.V.) to initiate and maintain a comprehensive professionalization and consistent destigmatization of practicing psychological counsellors outside the medical profession in Germany. In particular, initiatives are being discussed that aim to strengthen professional identity, harmonize competence standards and achieve comprehensive social acceptance. Through a multidimensional approach that includes promoting rigorous educational programs, intensifying legislative advocacy, and fostering positive public perception, this paper intends to present a coherent strategy for the sustainable enhancement and emancipation of the profession.

The dispute over the recognition and professionalization of psychological counsellors outside the medical profession in Germany has triggered a central debate in the field of mental health services. VpsyB e.V. faces the challenge of developing appropriate strategies that not only promote internal professionalization, but also a repositioning of the profession in society.

Promotion of a homogeneous educational base

- Development of a standardized curriculum
The development and implementation of a standardized training curriculum that includes theoretical foundations, methodological skills and ethical principles is of crucial importance. It requires close cooperation with training providers.

- Certification and recertification
Institutional certification of psychological counselors by VpsyB e.V., including regular recertification, is necessary to ensure continuous quality control and assurance of professional expertise.

- Further training for psychological counselors
The introduction of further training measures for psychological counselors, such as groups using the Balint method or individual supervision, promotes the continuous development and reflection of their own professional practice. This leads to professional recognition and a deepening of skills.

Legislative advocacy and normative framework setting

- Active influence
VpsyB e.V. must take a proactive role in the legislative landscape and advocate for a legal framework that enables a clear distinction to be made between therapeutic and non-therapeutic psychological activities.

- Ethical code
The implementation of the comprehensive ethical code has already served to strengthen the professional self-image and build public trust. Such a code defines ethical guidelines and standards of conduct for psychological counselors.

- Quality code
The establishment of a quality code for psychological counselors, which defines criteria for quality assurance and control, is of great importance. This code enables uniform assessment and guarantees high standards in counseling practice.

Destigmatization and raising public awareness

- Educational and information campaigns
Targeted information work should educate the public about the role, value and importance of psychological counseling outside of the medical profession. This includes the use of traditional and digital media to achieve broad awareness and education.

- Strengthening interprofessional exchange
The promotion of regular dialog between psychological counselors and related professional groups (e.g. doctors, psychotherapists) aims to reduce misunderstandings and strengthen cooperation. The exchange of specialist knowledge and joint projects can improve understanding of the respective fields of activity.

Conclusion
The need to professionalize the occupational profile of psychological counsellors outside the medical profession in Germany and to destigmatize their status in society is undisputed. The VpsyB e.V. plays a central role in this and must implement multidimensional strategies to harmonize educational standards, take an active legislative role and carry out effective educational work. Such a policy promises not only to professionalize the profession of psychological counsellor, but also to enhance its social status and destigmatize it.
